The Yamaha SY-22 (1990) is a digital synth that uses a synthesis method known as vector synthesis (similar to that on the ProphetVS and Korg Wavestation) in which samples and FM sounds (adapted from Yamaha's DX line) are altered and combined to create new and interesting sounds.
This keyboard really excels at synth, choirs, strings, pads and ambient sounds. Some have described the children's choir patches as just plain disturbing. This sample disc contains many evolving sounds, thanks to the vector engine. To capture the evolving sound of this keyboard the sample disc contains long recordings, most 10-15 seconds before the loop.
The sampled version of this keyboard has many advantages over the hardware unit. With the samples you are not limited to just one sound at a time (you can use as many simultaneous sounds as your computer can support). In addition, the with your softsoftware version also has unlimited polyphony.
The SY-22 works well for industrial, jungle, light dance, ambient, avant-garde noise...well just about everything. The SY-22 has been used by Moby, Skinny Puppy and Scanner.
